BRET MCKENZIE

Bret McKenzie is a Grammy and Academy Award-winning artist most known for his work as one half of the musical comedy duo Flight of the Conchords, whose witty songs and eponymous TV show brought him international recognition. Now an established solo artist in his own right, Bret will release his second solo album, Freak Out City, on August 15 via the iconic Sub Pop label.

Written and developed on the road with his eight-piece band, the album was recorded in both Los Angeles and New Zealand, and co-produced by Bret and his long time collaborator Mickey Petralia. An international tour (AU, NZ, US, UK) is also planned for later this year, featuring a band of renowned New Zealand musicians, multi-night residencies, and special guest collaborations.

In 2012, Bret won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for his ballad "Man or Muppet," from the Disney film The Muppets. His songs have been performed by Kermit the Frog, Celine Dion, Lizzo, Benedict Cumberbatch, Brittany Howard, Homer and Lisa Simpson, Fred Armisan, Jason Segal, Tony Bennett, and many more. He released his debut solo album, Songs Without Jokes, in August 2022, and most recently contributed an original song (“Could This Be Love?”) to the soundtrack for the wildly successful A Minecraft Movie.
