Toronto is perhaps the most exciting and inventive City in music nowadays. With the likes of Drake and The Weeknd taking over the world, it’s a hotbed of possibility and inspiration. This isn’t lost on one of the City’s most exciting new artists and Toronto native singer songwriter Kai. With an already proven track record of writing and featuring on 3 huge hit songs (“Revolution” for Diplo, “Mind” for Jack U and the double platinum US single “Never Be Like You”, a collaboration with Australian electronic pioneer Flume that has been the biggest selling single in his home country in 2016). In recent years Kai has been honing her own musical vision whilst dipping into the world of collaborations and features as some of the worlds top artists have discovered her quite startling and brilliant songwriting ability, and on top of that, a voice that is literally a gift, full of character and like honey on the ears, within years the moment you hear a Kai song on the radio, you’re going to know it’s her.
It’s attracted the likes of Malay (Frank Ocean, Sam Smith), the aforementioned Diplo, Skrillex, Flume, Dave Sitek (TV On The Radio), Gregg Kurstin (Adele, Sia), Mike Dean (Kanye West, Travis Scott, Beyonce, The Weeknd) to name but a few and work continues on her debut solo effort that is expected to see the light of day in 2017. With songs straight from her soul and absolutely light years sonically from her features so far, there’s no doubt that Kai’s solo material is going to astound and surprise those expecting her to simply capitalize on the success of her work with others, but this is one of those artists who has absolutely her own vision and will create her own musical world.
In great demand for her co-writing too, Kai has many strings to her bow, and having already written with the likes of Jessie J, Childish Gambino, Rihanna, Janelle Monae and many others, her songs will no doubt be part of the musical landscape for years to come. For now though, the excitement builds towards her own music and 2017 could well be a huge year, but just the beginning of Kai’s artistic journey.
